Multitasking and How Not to Do It:  Information provided by Shannon Husk who is a Clinical Counsellor and Prevention and Community Engagement Service Provider for BC Gaming who specializes in issues regarding technology (social media and gaming).

Did you know that every time you take a look at your Instagram, Snapchat, or whatever feed while doing your homework or working that it will take you on average 15- 25 minutes to get focused back on to what you were working on?

We are taught that multitasking is good. But Dr. Paul Mohapel’s research has found that monotasking has more overall benefits to learning (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4I4Ma0R330 ) Essentially, one is not multitasking when going to other sites while doing homework but rather multi-switching or task switching. Overall high multitaskers are bad at managing memory because the executive functioning part of the brain is compromised. Multitasking leads to fragmented thinking. In 2014, Commonsense media found that multitasking affects kids learning, schoolwork and memory.

Author, Thomas Kersting of the book “Disconnected” says, “the more we become used to sound bites and tweets, the less patient we will be with more complex, more meaningful information.” I recently spoke to two Camosun college professors who said that students do not know how to study because they are unable to focus and that they struggle with writing an essay because they are so used to writing in a shortened format.

What can we do to help ourselves and our kids to become monotaskers? We can tell them to turn off their cell phones when doing homework or put them out of reach (I have a basket I keep in the kitchen for ours) and have kids do homework in public areas of the home so that you can help them manage their time more effectively. Please make sure to have the conversation with them about your concerns and your reasons for doing this. There are also apps that can filter out social media and other distractors: Self Control app, Freedom, Anti-social and FocusWriter to name a few. Again, explain why there might be a need for these apps if you choose to use them because we want to be guides, not controllers with our children/youth.  Most kids need help self-regulating technology, as do many adults so let’s do what we can to help them.
