SCHOOL NEWS...

TONIGHT!  Parent Literacy Workshop:  Dear parents/caregivers, you are invited to a Cordova Bay literacy talk tonight, Wednesday March 6th, 7:00 pm in the Learning Commons.  

Dr. Orla Colgate, whose research area focuses on parental involvement in reading at home, will be talking to you on the following topics:

    • Decoding - understanding the challenges children face and how families can offer support
    • Motivation - why a child’s motivation to read is vital for their success and how families can help

Lisa Kinshella, who teaches Reading Recovery at Cordova Bay School and also works as an Instructional Support Teacher for Early Learning and Literacy in Saanich School District, will be talking to you about the following topics:

    • The Importance of Play in the Early Years, (0 to 8 years of age)
    • Why it is Important for the Development of Oral Language and Emergent Literacy

Cordova Bay Triathlon Team:  The Cordova Bay Triathlon team is starting up its 6th year right after spring break!  See the attached PDF for more information.   Registration is open and you can email Brenda Nemeth at brendanemeth@shaw.ca to register your son or daughter or complete the registration section in the attached PDF and return it to your child's teacher or the school office.  Bike and run practices will start on April 13th and swim practice (if you would like to join this part) starts at Commonwealth Pool on April 1st.If you have any questions, please email teacher sponsor and coach, Lisa Kinshella at lkinshella@saanichschools.ca.

Cross Country Team:  There will be a meeting on Monday, March 11th, at lunch in the gym for those students in Grades 3-5 interested in joining the Cross Country team.  Notices will be handed out at the meeting for students to bring home.

Heart & Stroke Foundation:  A big THANK YOU to everyone for participating in the Heart Beat Hop last Friday!  Just a reminder to please return your Heart & Stroke Pledge envelopes to the office by March 11th.  Thank you for your support in fundraising for the Hearth & Stroke Foundation!

World Cups - Victoria’s Youth Soccer Festival:  Easter Weekend, April 19th & 20th at Lochside Park.  The Festival’s primary purpose is to have fun and make new friends!  Visit their website for more information and to REGISTER.

Peninsula “1000 X 5” Children’s Book Recycling Project:  This project operates through partnership with School District No. 63 (Saanich).  Since 2008, 141 thousand books have been collected for redistribution for young children and families on the Peninsula.  If you can donate gently-used children’s picture books, please bring them to the school and put them in the box by the office. The books will be forwarded to volunteers who will package them for distribution to young children and families on the Saanich Peninsula.
